MUNICIPAL CONSOLIDATION. TO THE EDITOR.

Sir— Will you allow me to point out that Mr. Maodonald, in explaining his scheme for consolidation of the oity loans, eeems to hive overlooked the fact that at tho end of 19 years tho Corporation can re-issue the .£200,000 then due at, as he assumes, 4 per cent., thereby reducing the annual interest to .£BOOO. Consequently the saving of £2000 under his scheme then ceases, and for the remaining 31 years he would cauao an annual loss of whioh, with the £50,000 ho would add to the city debt, is a very different result to the promised saying of £305,334. The soheme, on examination, breaks down at several points, bnt tbe above will suffice to test its value by. I am, &c, John Duthie.

Hie Excellency the Governor has intimated his intention to be present at the first of the Sohool of Design entertainments to-morrow evening. The programme will be published to-morrow. Amongst the passengers for the Sonth by the Pengnin this afternoon were Miss Bandell, who is on her way to Melbourne, and Mr. O. H. Pinel, who is to relieve Mr. Alex. Burnes as manager of the Oamaru branch of the New Zealand Government Insurance? business. Some discussion took place at to-day's meeting of the Education Board in reference to dissatisfaction, which waa stated by Mr. J. Young to exist in reference to the recent reductions of salaries. The Chairman said that the reductions were working ont very much as the Board had anticipated, and their amount was_ rather less than 7 per cent. U> dissatisfaction was mostly confined to the lower grades— the unclassified teaohers who reoeived .£6O a year and those classified assistants who were paid .£BO or thereabouts. So far as he could judge the reductions were fair and reasonable. As to the unclassified teachers, the fault was their < own, because they did not classify. Mr. Yeung said he had heard that J£s a year had beon taken off teachers in reoeipt of £40 or J650, while the salaries of the Board's ■officers were untouched. The complaints he had heard came chiefly from thoae who were not in the servioe. Mr. Bunny objected to the disoussion of matter upon mere gossip, and without a notice of motion. He thought the Board bad dealt very liberally with the teachers all round, and that the reductions had not gone as far as they ouerhfc to have gone. After some further conversation, the snbjeot was dropped. In Banco Court to-day, before his Honopr Mr. Jnstioe Richmond, Mr. Skerrett, on behalf of Apia Te Parehuia and others, moved for an injunction to restrain the pale of the Whangara Blook under writ of fi. fa., upon the ground that the land is inalienable. Mr. Bell appears for the defendant, Charles Seymour, of Gisborne, and argument is proceeding as we go to press. CoxstjMPTiox, Wastiko Diseases, asd General Dbbilitv. — Doctors disagree as to the relative value of Cod liver Oil and Hypophoaphiteg— the one supplying strength and flesh, the other giving nerve power and acting as a tonic to the digestive and entire system. But in " Scott's Emulsion or Prfts Cod Livbb Oil with Hypophosphitrs " the two are combined , and the effect is wonderful. Thousands who h&ve derived no permanent benefit from other preparations have been cured by this. '• Scott's Emulsion " is perfectly palatable, and is easily digested even by those who cannot tolerate plain Cod Liver Oil. Sold by all Chemists, two sizes. Urge and small, ia 6d md 2s 6d.
