Education Board.

The monthly meeting of the Education Board was hold this morning. There were present— Mr. J. R. Blair '(Chairman), the Rev. J. Paterson, Mr. W. C. Buchanan, M.H.R., and Messrs. H. Bunny, F. H. Praser, and J. Young. Accounts and salaries amounting to .£2148 12s 4d were passed for payment. Leave of absence was granted to Mr. Beetham, M.H.R. , and Mr. Buchanan, M.H.8., for four months, to Mr. A. W. Brown for two months, and Dr. Newman, M.H.R., for a month. A circular from the Education Department, in reference to the syllabus of the Art for Schools Association, was referred to the Inspector to report upon. The Inspector was also requested to report upon the circular of the South Canterbury Education Board on the subject of strict average, the purport of which has already been published. With regard to the oiroular of the North Canterbury Education Board, controverting the education statement of last session as tp the cost of buildings, it was resolved that receipt, of the doonment be acknowledged. The resignations of Mr. John B. Stewart, pupil teacher at Mount Cook, and Mr. Wm. iviursell, teacher at Dreyerton, were acoepted. Miss Alice Lpokfe's leave of absenoe was extended to the end of the year ; leave of absenoe for a month from 19th November was granted to Miss Emily Browne, of Vogeltown; and an application of Miss Emma Davis, of Pirinoa, for extension of leave, was refused. An application from residents at Shannon for an aided aohool was left iv the hands of the Chairman and Inspeotor. The reqnest of Mr. N. A. Anderson, for permission to clear trees from certain Bections at Manukau township, was granted, on the oondition that the work be done thoroughly. A letter was received from the Masterton Committee in reference to unsatisfactory sanitary arrangements in connection with their school. It was decided to ask the Committee to send in tenders and estimates for the work, and if those are eatlbfaotory, the Board will bear half the cost of the work. Tenders were opened for the alteration of the Gladstone School, and the acceptance of the lowest was left to the Chairman's discretion, after ascertaining the amount of the architect's estimate. Particulars of repairs required at Tauherenikau were forwarded by the local committee. The Board decided that the works must be carried out by means of the funds in the hands of the oommittee. On the Inspector's recommendation, i5lO was voted to the Carterton Committee towards the cost of removing closets. The clearing of tho school Bite at Mangamahoe was deterred till next winter. Tenders were ordered to be called for the provision of increased accommodation at Waihenga, the work to bo done in the Christmas holidays. The Wadestown Committee were offered £4 for repairs. Leave was given to the Upper Hutt Committee to sell their old sohoolhouse, for which it is stated .£7 can be obtained, and to expend the money in erecting new shelter sheds. The application of the Te Aro Committee for .£ls for repairs was made subject to the result of the review of the Inspector and architect, in connection with the building grant. The opening of tenders for the creation of a school at Mangatuinoko was deferred. Decause the proposed site is surrounded by felled bash, which has yet to be burned off. It was decided, that tenders should be again invited about the end of the year, and that an iron roof be substituted for the wooden one specified in the plans. Regulations drawn up for the forthcoming scholarship examinations were adopted, and the Rev. Dr. West,' M. A., LL.B., and Mr. A. M'Gregor, 8.A., were appointed to act as examiners. The question of the addition of a classroom to Pahautanui School was referred back to the architect. The 'suggestion of the Chairman that* a room 30ft by 20ft be added to the Vogeltown School was ordered to be considered by the Inspector and arohiteot. Leave was given to Mr. A. D. Riley, principal of the School of Design, to act as examiner of drawing under the Education Department. It was agreed that £16 a year should be paid to the proprietors of the Ngahauranga Hall for ths nse of their bnilding for school purposes.
