A Maori is in the' Hospital 'in a critical state, the result of injuries sustained by him while a prisoner in Mount Eden Gaol. He had a quarrel with a fellow-prisoner named Arthur Kirk while stone-breaking, and the latter pushed" the' Maorjkt into the quarry, causing rupture. Kirk ma sentenced by the gaol authorities to seven days' confinement on bread and water for this offence. A house in Sumner-atreet, Ponsonby, owned by Mr. Savory, and ocoupied by Mr. • PorU;: was deatroyea by fire at 2 a.m. today. The adjoining house is damaged. The insurance on the furniture was £100 in the New Zealandomee. Tjieinsuranoeon Savory's bnilding cannot be ascertained, as tUe owner is absent. The house adjoining, owned by Mr. Bout, and occupied, by Mr. Hilditoti, was also destroyed. It was insured for J8175 in the South British. ( ; . On Saturday the Addington team to play against tho United turned up in force, -whereas the United men, being under the impression that the match had been declared off for the day on account of the sports, did not appear. The Addington men claim the matbb. W.ESTFOBT, This Day. Anfrived — Manawatu, from Wanganui, and Moa, from Foxton (cattle laden, for Grey mouth), put in here through stress of weather.
