' Since Ist December, 1887, the total number of oases of typhoid f evar reported ; to the Melbourne Board of Health has numbered 1393, of wjiioh 293 have been fatal. , During the same period partjoulars. concerning 209 cases of diphtheria were sent to the Board.. The number of deaths was 100. At the Collingwood Court, six boys, whose ages ranged from 9 to 13 years, were oharged with killing a horse in a manner whioh involved onjielty. The evidenoe of a lawyer named Wm. Wilson was to the effeot that on the Ist inst. the boys were in Stndley Park. A' heavy black draught horse was ridden by them, two at a time, while .theAotherfe pelted the animal with 4in road metal. This was oqnlinfaed all day till 4 p.m., when they rushed the hone down a steep embankment to the River Yarra, , where they continued to pelt the . animal' with stones till he sanl in the river ' and,. was drowned. It was urged that the boys had no intention of killing the horse, and were riot aware of the serious nature of theoffenoe. The Benoh appeared to accept this view, and fined five of the' defendants 5s j each. •
