[By Telegraph. {Our Own Correspondent.) Palmerstou North, This Day. A rather serious accident happened yesterday afternoon in front of the Commercial Hotel. A butcher's cart was standing outside when the horso was started by the train and bolted. Alfred Reeves, the driver, ruhhed out to stop it, wheu he got his log crushed between the whoeland a post on the footpath. The leg was badly b.-okon. A meeting of ratepayers last night decided to rooommend tbe Council to leiiae the lato Town Hall site, but strongly opposed selling it. The Fire Brigade intend holding sports and an entertainment here on the Prince of WaleB 1 Birthday. ItraiTED PRESS ASSOCIATION.] PALMERaTON NORTH, THIB DAY. The public meeting last night resolved against the proposal to sell the Town Hall site to liquidate the Bank overdraft. It turns out that the overdraft is within legal limits, and oan be easily liquidated shortly. It iB also probable that a halfpenny general rate only will be required for the year, and that even a farthing rate may suffioe. The elections for the now Council are being held to-day. The three seats in each ward are being well contested.
