The Rugby Union will extend ita pntronage to the New Zealand Native football team playing in England next autumn. The Wellington Club have deoided to lease the Ponoke gymnasium two eveningß a week during the season , and will open it tomorrow evening. The gymnasium was under offer to the Athletics, but the latter did not lee their way to accept it. It is understood the Athletics will not have a gymnasium this season. Neither Gage nor Ellison has made up his mind to join vVarbriok's native team. Most of the men seleoted by Warbriok are now in Napier, and practice will be started this week. A matoh took: placo at Nowtown on Saturday between the first fifteen p.f Sfr. Patriot's College and the second fifteen of the Union Club, resulting in a draw, oaob side securing a point. Williams touohed down for the Unions towards the close of the game, and Mahoney for the Collegians, just after the opening of the first term. Mr. Swainson, Seoretary of the Wanganui Rugby Union, telegraphed to Mr. Lilly whito respecting a visit of the English team, and hasreoeived an answer to the effect that there is no chance of a matoh during this yiaffs, but possibly they may be able to pprangA a matoh in September. The gaoond {Iftpens of the Athletic and foneke olnjjs met at Npwtpwn on Saturday' for the first time this season, tfre matoh resulting in a viotpry for the Popekps by two point* to one point. The play was pretty wen, Pftolwd scrimmages were frequent, sad few rans w»»i» made. Jn the first spell of half an hour Johnson touched down for the Ponakes, and W. Murphy, late of the North ShoM Club, Auckland, for the Athletics , In the second term Merle t got over the line for the Ponekoa, and added another try to the score. None of the tries were converted into goals, although the angle in no case was very difficult. Burke, balf-baok of the Melrose Club, played a rattling good game for the Ponekes, Mb running and fending being excellent. The Oriental Club Bent two teams to the Hutt on Saturday to play against the first and seoond of the Epunis. The former olub hma considered rather wrak, as it bas only been in existence about a month. W. B. jHiH p«ip<*i#ed £he Oriental first, O'Shea performing the sam,e duties for the Epnni first. This game was very ftst, and rpsnltod in the defeat ot the town dub by two points to love. O'Shea (who played tha best game on the ground) and wolland were the scorers, and Luoena, H. Jonoi, and E, Welsh aUo played a good game for the winners, while for the Orientals W. Hill, W. Bendall, 0. Tringham and G. Hill did well. The seoond fifteen's matoh resulted in a draw, neither side being able to soore. For the Epunis' side Pitama (captain), Ano, Anohu, Moses and Jackson were about the best, and Liddle, Dnnne (captain), Thomas, A. Hill, and Dixon played hard for the Orientals. The Oriental, the new junior olub, is ptreadf petting very strong, ard amongst the new m«n who have joined 'i may be fljantioaed Smith (an a x» junior representative ot W«»rar«p»), Bend*U lldta of the Wellingtons), Tringham /of the Wellington College), and Duune, G, Bill, ajid Liddlp (of the Eivalt). AtrysecnredbyM'lntyrewaaoonverted joto a goal by Moore, and Moorhouse potted a goal, fhfi Athletio- Wellington nutoh resulted in » draw, neither side scoring. A. D. Thompson, half-b^cfe for the Wellingtons, played the bert game on tjje grpund, and fully justified his molneion in the representative team. It has been suggested that tbe same teams should play again next Saturday, but we understand it is probable a match will take place between the CO men Eeleoted on Saturday night by Messrs. Kin? and Nictolls. Tha following men have been cbo 3n to go into aotiva graining in view of tbe matches with the Englishmen >— Bacfcs— G. Cooper (Athletio), W. Vraewr /Athletio), A. D. Collins, however, kicked a splendid goal from a mark obtained by Maokay. Thobeatplayers for the College were C ; Gore and Elliott (coming players), Collins, Crawford and Evans. W. M'Lean played the best game for the Wellingtons, and K. Duncan, Poutawera, Clark, Wilford, and E. J. Robineon (oapt*in) also did good service. Two spells of 35 minutes «ach were played and Mr. C. Richardion aoted as umpire and referee. The result of tha matoh whioh came off in the Melrose paddook, Newtown, on Saturday, between tbe Melroso second and the Poneke third was a draw, each side getting a try. There was no score in the first spell and the play was pretty even, but in the seoond term it was slightly in favour of the Melrose < -<q. Ten minutes before time a Melrose tuaa got over the line and touohed down, bat Brewer was unable to place a goal. J»«t on the call of time King got oror the line for the Ponekes.
