The Australian Cable Service,

THREATENED INCREASE IN THE TARIFF. BT BLKCTRIC TELEGRAPH— COPYRIGHT. |REUTERs TELEORAMS.I (Received December 31, ?.3O p.m.) Melbourne, This Day. Tho Conference of Postmasters-General of Now South Wales, South Australia, and Viotoria will probably meet at Sydney about tho middle of January. With reference to the question of cablo latea, it is pointed out that New Zealand during last year received more cables than South Australia, but tho former Colony contributes nothing to the subsidy which is paid to the Company. It is expected, therefore, that the Australian Governments will take measures for their protection by imposing restrictions on messages for New Zealand. The last letter from Mr. J. Pender, Chairman of the Eastorn Extension Cable Company, to the New Zealand Government has been published here, and he now indicates that tho ; tariff will be increased by ono shilling a word unless New Zealand and New South Wales hand over to the Eastern Company their torminal rates.
