Eight men wero arrested yesterday nt tho Ellorslio racecourse, and charged this morning at the Resident' Magistrate's Court with playing a number of gamea with gaining tables. A remand was granted until to : morrow. This Dat. About 600 men from H.M.S. Nolson, Diamond, and Rapid, landed with anm to-day, and went through manoeuvres on the Takapuna racecourse. Two French warships aro expeoted to arrive here in a few days. Christchurch, 27th Docember. The Canterbury Eiflo Aesooiation meeting was continued to-day. No. 3 match, seven shots at 200, 300, and 500 yards, was won by Sergeant Stanford (Christchurch Rifles) with 74 points. He won the fourth match on similar terms with 72 points, and also the aggregate matoh. His aggregate; score was 185 ; and in'the match 10 shots at 500 yds ho mado 33 ; total, 218 Invercargill, 27th December. The Bluff Harbour Board woro in closo committee all day on the applications for the appointments to the pilot staff. Strong opposition on the part of somo members was shown to the restriction of age to under 40, sevoral men on tho staff who have nothing against them being a few years over that age. A member of the Board is a candidate for ono of the positions. Captain Tyson, tho harbour-master, is not a candidate. He was appointed three years ago at .£4OO, and tho Board has now reduced his salary to .£250 and house. General regret is expressed at his resigning. Ho ha? been most successful. He returns to England at a considerable sacrifice, as he had built a house at the port, and brought his family out only recently. Tho mill known as McKonzio and Roffe's, at Seaward Bush, was burnt down on Saturday night. The mill was owned by the Dunodin Iron and Hardware Company. Insuranco, if any, is effocted in that city. Westpobt, This Dat. A wrestling match between Ford and Lyons was won by Ford last night. Carterton, This Dat. Mr. Thomas Tolford, for many yoars Shoop Inspector for the Wairarapa, died this morning after a short illness. Tho doceased was universally respected, and much sympathy is felt for his largo family.
