RED HAIR.
The carrots have lost the day. The head of hair vulgarly known as " ginger, " but in more refined circles as " carrotty, " and in the threpvolume novel raised to the rank of " auburn, " has been proved to be the coarsest of all the descriptions of hirsuteadornmentwith which Nature has graced the ljumau head. For a German scientist lias been spending his leisure moments, u,Qt,Jiko Jiis argumentative companions, in splitting hairs, but in counting them; and, having procured specimens from heads of hair of different colours, he has found that the red hailstands lowest in the scale of numbers, and consequently highest in the scale of coarseness. Just as candles are manufactured eight, six, or four to the pound — the less the number, the greater the size — so do the filaments which hang from the human scalp vary in numbers with their uurefined natures. The Teutonic hair-counter credited the Rufus wig with 90,000 ; the swarthy cranium broke the record by 13,000 : the brown put on another 6,000; while the beautiful and bewitching blonde heads the poll far .and away with the noble total of 140,000. After this no doubt the tall and well-fledged " blonde, " on entering the ball-room, will look down with unmeasured scorn on her less favoured compeers, aud will hold her head still higher as she waltzes round the room, knowing that she has 50,000 more hairs on her pate than those who have come into the world with a more rubicund tint. If any person should doubt the correctness of these investigations there is nothing to prevent him ratifying them by counting over a few polls. -■
