Diocesan Synod.
Tho Synod resumed at 7.30 o'clock lasfc evening. The select committee appointed to take into consideration tho qnestion of the appointment of a diocesan clergyman, reported as follows f— (1) That tbe stipend of said clergyman be j6200 a«year, inolnsive of travelling expenses; (2) Thai a guarantee fund of .£175 a year for two years be raised by subscriptions f (3) That thore be a speoial offertory in each parish and parochial district on one Sunday in every year toward the payment of said clergyman ; and (4) That special subscription lists be circulated through tbe diocese with a clear statement of the purposes for which the money is being raisod. The report ma laid on the table. Mr. W. H. Warren moved—" (1) That a Select Committee bo appointed to inquire and report to the Synod as to tho expediency of devising means (and if considered expedient what means in tho opinion of the committee should be adopted), for assisting tho funds for* the maintenance of Churton College ; (2) that such committee consist of the Rev. J. M'William, Bey. A. 0. Williams, Rev. P. L. Cameron, Mr. Eons Marten and the mover. He explained that the college had been founded for the education of Maori girls, and since the death of Mr, Churton, which event ocenrred recently, it had been ascertained thai the institution would have to close unless pecuniary assistance were given. He trusted tbe Synod would assist to prevent the college from being closed. The motion was seconded by tho Bey. T. L. Tudof. The President, in the course of the discussion which followed, said that the matter was wholly outside the functions of tho Synod, and ho saw no particular necessity for a committee. Mr. Warren explained that the Synod was not asked to take over the institution. It was simply asked to show a little practical sympathy until the late founder's estate was wound np. •Tbe motion was lost. Mr. Arkwright moved a resolution to the effect that in the opinion of the Synod it was not desirable that the payment of any portion of a clergyman's stipend should bo delayed on account of the assessment of tho parish being in arrear. He said it was very unfair that a clergyman should suffer for his parish being it) arrears with its subscript tiona, and he suggested that tbe stipendsshould be paid out of the General Church. Fund. .The motion was seconded by Mr. F. de X, Clere. ' ' Aftet considerable discussion the resolution was put to the vote and lost. On the motion of Mr. Pennefather, it was decided, " That it is desirable that steps be taken- ior the formation of a Diocesan Lay Readers' Association." Mr. Eons Marten moved, and it wan agreed to, that ft resolution be passed expressive of regret at the illness of Yen. Archdeacon Stock arid Capt. Hewitt. On the motion of the Eev. P. L. Cameron, it was decided "That a Seloot Committee be appointed to consider the desirableness or otherwise of altering the date of the end of the financial year from 30th June to 31st December, such committee to consist of tho Eev. T. L. Tudor, Bey. T. Fancourt, Eev. W. E. Paige, Messrs. Bradey, Gaby, and the mover." A report from the Bey. Dr. Harvey, Bector of the Wanganui Collegiate Sohool, on the working of that institution during the year was read. It showed that the attend" ance had not increased during the past year, the reason implied being the prevailing commercial depression. The efficiency of the school had been fully maintained. At the Civil Service examination held last October eight candidates from the school had passed, [ and four at the New Zealand University Matrioulation examination in December, One of the latter had passed in the extra subjects required in the "Medical Preliminary."
