The Volunteers.

Great interest is being taken in the ¦bayonet competition to take place at the Volunteer Drillshed on Monday evening next. The committee havo decided not to have an entrance fee, some of the corps having objeoted. The prize will be a very valuable silver cnp, presented by the ladies of Wellington, and we believe that the conditions are that it should be won twice in succession or throe times at intervals. We are, glad to hear that most of tho corps intend competing. , , . , E Company parades for musketry instruction at Mount Cook to-morrow. The Kaiwarra Rifles paraded last evening •at the Public Hall, Johnsonville, when 37 of .all ranks wore present. After inspection the recruits were taken over by Staff-Ser-geant-Major Bell and put through manual and firing exorcises and squad drill for some considerable time. Owing to the bad state of the weather the corps had to remain indoors, and were put through manual and firing exercises by Lieutenant Costello and ' the non-commissioned officers. A challenge to fire a match with the Newtown Rifles was

read beforo the company, and a motion, propo°ed by Private Earp and seconded by Corporal Kowe, that the challenge be accepted, was nnanimou-ly uppro\ed by the corps. The match 'n to tako place at theKaiwarra range on Saturday :iext, the Ist October, the conditions beinjj ten men aside, 200 and 300 yards, neveti shots at each raDge. The corps is ordered out to parade at Kaiwarra on Monday next, for skirmishing drill. The D Battery paraded at the Volunteer Drillnhcd last evening, all the officers being present. The following will represent tbe Kaiwarra R'fles in tho match against the Newtown Rifles on Saturday :— Serpreants Sinclair and Coleman, Corporals Sedgwick and King, Privates Coleman, Jas. Holmes, Earp, Ryan, Hoffff, and lijan; emergencies, Harris and Bowler. The conditions aro 200 and 300 yards, gevon shots at each range and one sighting shot.
