The St. Albans Election.

Reeves by a big •majority for St. Albans is regarded here by •the general, public as one of the signal aucrfleßseß^ef l the v eleotions in Canterbury, and as o great journalistic triumph. Mr. Reoves veame forward djrectly in the interests of the working classes, and the work done by his committee was voluntary throughout. •On the other side was arraigned all the -strength of tho moneyed men, and aU the in'flnence the directors of the Press <3onipany «»nld bring to bear. Thousands of copies <of their papers were given away in the St. __baus district, and hand bills, cartoons, &a., were freely used. So confident were Mr. flarrick's oommittee that they openly boasted of wore than 1200 pledges, and were ready to baok their man to any amount. lav. told that opporite the principal polling place, lust within the grounds of the Hon. J. 1. Peacock, wherein Mr. Garriok's committee had pitched their tent, a chair had beon prepared to carry Mr. Garriok shoulder high. There is talk ako of an elaborate supper which had been all prepared to celebrate the crushing of the Lyttelton Times. When the result was announced Mr. Reeves got into a carriage to address the people, who took the horsrs out and dragged the vehicle a mile and a-quarter to the Times office, about which an immense orowd of perhaps 3000 assembled. The scene was one of immense enthusiasm, cheers being given again and again, and the successful candidate had twice to address the pcoplo. Inolnding Cheviot, 16 out of 19 seats were . won by the candidates supported by the Lyttelton Times and Star.
