Island Bay Racing Club.
A preliminary meeting of the newly-formed Island Bay Racing Club was held at the Post Office Hotel last evening, about 30 gentlemen being present. Captain Hume was voted to the chair, and briefly stated the object of the meeting, which was to appoint office-bearers and suggest a programme for the season. Up to the present 160 had ifiven in their names as member?. This, he thought, was a very (rood start. Mr. T. Dwyer, the secretary pro tern., said he had interviewed several business gentlemen in the city, and had obtained their concent to act as stewards. He wonld ask tSe Chairman* to submit them to the meeting, and of eonrse any member' could suggest others. As far as the' secretaryship was concerned, he had promised' the promoters to see the club over the first meeting 1 , after whioh a permanent secretary would have to be elected. On the motion of Mr. A. Turner, seconded by Mr. H. Sullivan, the following officers were' elected for the ensuing' seasonsJudge, Captain Hume; Timekeeper, Mr. Kohn ; Starter, Mr. j! H. Bollock ; Clerk of the Scales, Mr. F. W. Cbttrell ;' Clerk of the Course, Mr. T. Smith : Stewards, Messrs. A. A. Stuart Mentcath, Jno. Young, Chas. Stewart, J. E. Hayes, James Ames, and Sam. Dransfield, J.P. ; Secretary pro tern., Mr. T. A". 1 Dwyer. On the motion' qf Mr. Clothier, 'it was resolved thai the 'name of the clnb be tb?e ' Island Bay Racing Club. Mr. Goldsmith moved that it be a recom> mendation to the stewards to hold three meetings in tho coming season — a one day's, meeting abont the 24th ' October, which would catch the horses going to Christchnrch ; another one day in November, twq or three days before the Wellington R.C. Spring Meeting; and a two days' meeting |on the 22nd and 24th January. The Queen's. Drive was to be opened on Anniversary Day, and that would bring 'out a lp,t of people. The motion was adopted with the proviso' that the definite fixtures should be left to the stewards.' Mr. Dwyer explained tha,t the course had been offered to the club for three year.* at .£250 for the first year and £350 pet annum for the other two. It was subsequently explained that it was optionable for the olub to renew the lease after the first year. Ia answer to Mr. Brotherton, it was explained that there wonld be no liability attaching to
the individual members in addition to t guinea sub9oriptiou. Mr. J. Mandel »ug gested that the members' tiukotM should admit tho mombor and two ladies, instead of one. Thiß was seconded and carried unanimously. On the motion of Mr. Goldsmith, the Metropolitan Rales of Racing were adopted. Mr. Brotherton moved that the by-laws of the clnb be printed and a copy sent to each of the members. Some exception was taken to this as an unnecessary expense, and on being put to tho meeting it was lost. After Borne further disousaion of various matters of detiil in connection with the managemeut of the club, the mooting was brought to a oonolusion with a vote of thanks to the Chairman.
