HE SHIP NORTHUMBEKLAND AGROUND AT NAPIER.
Information was received in town this afternoon to the effect that tho Shaw, Savill and Albion Co.'s fine ship Northumberland had gone aground on a bank at Napier. Wo aro indebted to the company's agents for tho following telegrams convoying particulars of the affair :— Napier, This Dat, 1.45 p.m. The Northumberland parted her cable about 11 this morning, and drifted on to a bank about two miles to westward. The lifeboat went out to her soon after, bnt was driven ashore. The steamer Sir Donald has just gone out to her assiatanco. The steamor Weka will follow in an hour. If the Northumberland gets ovor tho bank sho might be all right yet. Thoro is a heavy sea and strong gale. 1.49 p.m. Tho Northumberland appoars to be riding to her anchor. Tho Sir Donald is alongside. [The Northnmborjiind is a largo vessel of about 2000 tons register. Sho is commanded by Captain Todd, and has just arrived at Napier from Lytteltoh, having on board about 1000 tons of original cargo from London, tho greater part of which consists . of material for tho Wairoa bridge. There aro also about 500 tons of wheat shipped at Lyttelton for London, and about 600 tons coal. After discharging cargo sho was to bavo loaded with frozen meat for London.]
