The Municipal Five Brigade.

The City Council will, to-morrow ovoning, consider tho following report of the Firo Brigade Committoo :— The committee beg to report that thoy liave had under consideration a number of suggestions made by the Captain of tho Firo Brigade, haying for their object the increased efficiency of tho Brigade. Ono of such suggostious was that a steam firo engine should bo purchased at an estimated cobt of .61200 ; but tho committee, whilo recognising tho fact that a steam firo engino would be eminently Eerviceablo in case of a largo firo, do not feel at liberty to recommend the expenditure of such a large amount of money at prosont. Tho following aro tho recommendations which the committeo, after full consideration, have now to make to the Council :— l. That 2000 foet of bost quality 2i-inch canvas hose bo obtained. 2. Thut the larjro room at tho 'station, Man-ners-street, be fitted up as a residenoo tor tho captain, the work to be done by contract. 3. That a reol-shed be erected at tho Fitzherbort-torraco Reservo in connection with tho alarm-boll already ordered. 4. That tenders be invited for tho supply of coats for the firemen, ono coat for each man. With roferonco to tho propoaed fitting-up of the largo room at tho Firo Brigade station as a residenco for the captain, the committoo consider that it would bo a groat advantage that this officer should be constantly on the spot, to diroct the proceedings to be taken when an alarm of fire is given; and tho City Suryoyor's estimate of tho cost of the alterations is not a vory largo amount. Tho committee rogrot that a further expenditure for new hoso is necessary; but if the efficiency of the brigade is to be kept up, the expenditure is unavoidable. With respoot to the coats, it is only necossary to state that thoso now in uso were made abont sevon years ago. A number of other matters woro brought under tho notice of tho committee, but tho above arc tho most pressing', and the committee are of opinion that the remainder may stand over for tho present. — Samuel Brown, Chairman.

The steamer Ponguin, from Dunedin and Lyttelton, was coming in as wo went to Press with our second edition. A cable message received by the N.Z.S. Co., dated London, 19th inst., announces that the Lotterowo has sailed for Wellington. An addition to tho list of Justices will shortly be gazetted. We understand that the names of Mr. Frank Allen, General Manager of tho Colonial Insurance Company, of this city, and Captain Fairchild will bo among the new Justices. Two little mites namod Charles Eobort Petorson and Alice Maud Peterson, aged 4V and 3 years respectively, wero committed by Mr. Wardoll to tho Burnham Industrial School this afternoon. It was stated that tho mother of the childron is a prostitute, and their father is undergoing a sentence in the Terrace Gaol. Tho cases in which Joseph Dunstan Tronory nnd Elizaboth Trenery are charged with having recoived stolen goods from the convict Crabtreo were called in tho Magistrate's Court this afternoon beforo Mr. Wardoll. Inspector Browne asked that tho accused should be remanded for another week, on the ground that there is ro Judgo in Wellington at the present time to sign a writ of habcus corpus to enable Crabtreo to appear, his evidence against the female prisoner being material. Mr. Skorrott, for the_ defence, strenuously opposed tho application. After argument his Worship remanded the aoonsed until Friday, at 2 p.m. Bail was renewed in each case. Dr. Kenny, who was for some timo House Snrgoon of tho Wellington Hospital, has beon appointed Modioal Superintendent of tho Hospital at Hamilton, 84 miles from Auckland, at a salary of JE3OO per annum, with liberty of private practico within a three-milo radius. Sorao weeks ago, Mr. John Tinline, the well-known southern run-holder, obsorved in tho Upper Wanganui district a somewhat peculiar plant. It was about throe feet in height, and covered with white flowers, in the cups of whioh large numbers of moths were struggling. On investigation it appeared that the flowers wore regular insect traps, almost every ono of them having a moth firmly hold in its grip. Mr. Tinline became so much interested in the botanical curiosity that ho plucked a number of the moth-containing blooms and brought them to Wellington. He has sinco deposited thorn at tho Colonial Museum, in order that Dr. Hector and Mr. Maskoll might pursuo a course of enquiry which might possibly prove of advantage to the colony. Thoso gentlemen havo opened correspondence with persons who aro familiar with tho habits of tho plant, which is a nativo of tho Capo Colony, whonoe tho seeds which propagated tho Wanganui growth wore brought. It is considered possible that the flowers may, if cultivated, provo useful in assisting to deal with the codlin moth pest. Children- htaiivino to death on account of their inability to digwt food, will find a most marvellous food and remedy in Scott's Emulsion of Pure I Cod Liver Oil with HvponiosriiiTEs.
