MORE FIRES IN AUCKLAND.

Two fires took placo at Arch Hill yoster- { day, resulting in darnago of over .£2OOO. i The first was at 2 p.m., when a four- ! roomed cottage in Russell-street, owned by j Afonaghan and occupied by W. H. Chappell, was burned down with its contents, j The honse was insured for .£l5O in the London and Lancashire. Tho furniture was uninsured. The fire originated at the ' cooking oven. The second outbreak was at 8 p.m. on the New North-road when five * shops with dwellings attached wero dcs- ; troyed. It originated in Warren's grocery shop, in the wing. A young man named ' Lightfoot made an unsuccessful attempt to ' suppress the fire, but fell forward in the ] burning niasa, which appeared to him to bo J burning in tea chests, and burnt his hands ■ and was compelled to retire. He states that ! had a couplo of buckots been handy at the ; outset the fire might easily havo been put out. Tho firo proceeded unohecked, owing ' to tho delay in. the arrival of the Salvage ] corps from town. Four shops had gone • before offectivo measures could bo taken, and then it was found impossible to save tho ; fifth, tho whole block being burned to tho ground. Tho following is the list of insur- ; ances : — The first three shops wore two story, , and owned by Young Warren, who had them insured in the Union for XBOO re- . insured. Tho other two shops wero owned ■ by Hollaby, and insured in the New Zealand for £315. Tho westward shop of tho block was occupied by W. IX Warren, as a grocery. The stock was insured for .£l5O in. tho South British, and the furniture for £10, the loss boing total. Tho sooond shop ( was ooonpied by Worden, bootmaker, and ] was insured in the Mew Zealand office . for JE2OO. The third shop was occupied by M'Kellar, confectioner, and was uninsured. The fourth shop was occupied by Lambert, \ awl insured for JJSO in the Imperial. Tho - last shop of tho block was occupied by Nettlingham, bootmaker, and insured for .600 - in the Norwich Union. The damage to . Davies' dwellinghouse and Neal's store is j very trifling, principally by water. The ( risks are hold by the Union and Colonial • offices. .
