Tho heat of the Junior Pairs, Star Boating Club, which could not be finished on Monday becauso of an accident to ono of tho boats, was got off yesterday evening, when C. Richardson (bow) and J. R. Gibbons (stroke) defeated M. Nathan (bow) and F. L. Hntchinson (stroke) by two feet. Tho race was an exciting ono, the boats keeping level with each other until within a few yards from the goal. The course was a straight one, commencing at Thomas' shed, Oriental Bay, and finishing at a boat off the Queen's Wharf. Tho race was rowed in converted double sculling skiffs, tho pair-oared boat damaged on the previous occasion not being fit for use in time. A. Johnson steered tho losing crew, S. Hume being coxs. of the other boat. Mr. D. G. A. Cooper acted as starter, and Mr. W. FitzGorald as judge. Tho second heat of tho Yonng Fours, Wollington Racing Club, waß rowed yostorday evening, when Taylor's crew defeated Cummins' by about half a longth. Tho crews were as follows :— W. Soutt (bow), E. Potrie (2), W. Ballinger (3), T. R. H. Taylor (stroke) ; E. Barber (bow), G. M'Lean (2), N. M'Lean (3), G. Cnmmins (stroke). The raco waß well contested. Tho course was from Thorndon Baths to the southern end of tho Queen's Wharf. Hibbert's and Wyldo's crews will row this evening. Mr. D. Bowie has finished building a large pleasure boat for the Star Boating Club. She is a good, Bubstantially-built craft, and will no doubt give the Vslub satisfaction. The Nelson and Wakatu (Nelson) Rowing Clubs have defined an amateur oarsman or sculler as follows : — " An amateur oarsman or scullor must be a paying member of a recognised rowing club whioh has been in existence not less than Bix months, and which numbera not less than 20 paying mombers. He must not after tho Ist of October, 1886, himself have derived any pecuniary profit, directly or indirectly, from rowing or sculling in a race, or from the funds of his club." It will be recollected that a similar definition was adopted by the Wellington Rowing Club. Tho Star Boating Club also passed a somewhat similar rulo, the only difference from the definition wo have quoted being that tho Star Club stipulated that the rule must be retrospective, while tho other clubs only askod that it should apply from the Ist of laßt month, bo as not to includo Hoarn and other oarsmen who havo in tho past derived pecuniary benefit from rowing.
