EXPLOSIVES COMPANY (Limited), Glasgow, are the manufacturers of the J3I new patented explosive called " BLASTING GELATINE," which they are prepared to Bupply through their various Agents, packed in boxes of 501bs each, in accordance with British Government regulations. This powerful explosive is a compound of nitro-glycerine, of which it contains 93 per cent., together with a special quality of nitro-cotton. Its disruptive force is enormous, being not less than 50 per cent, greater than that of No. 1 Dynamite. In appearance it somewhat resembles a thick jelly of a brownish colour ; bnt some of the qualities, which the Company are licensed to make, have various ingredients incorporated with the jelly, with the object of modifying the force of the explosion. BLASTING GELATINE is supplied by the Company in cartridges of any required size. In its normal state it is a tough, plat-tic mass, having a specific gravity of about I*6. Its plasticity makes it very convenient for charging boreholes, as by squeezing tho cartridges with a wooden rod, they can be made to fill the borehole completely. In cold weather it hardens, and loses its jelly-like character. In this state it may be nsed for open blasting ; bnt it is not recommended to use it frozen for charging boreholes, as its hardness renders it incapable of accommodating ltßelf to the inequalities of the hole, and attempts to force it might result in accident. Frozen Blasting Gelatine may be softened for nse, with perfect safety, in the warming pans employed for thawing Dynamite. The effect prodnced by the explosion of Frozen Blasting Gelatine is more violent than that prodnced by the explosion of the unfrozen material, because the Boft elastic Blasting Gelatine yields to the shock of the explosion, while the frozen material does not. BLASTING GELATINE is more insensible to shocks than even Dynamite, and hence it is necessaryto employ for its explosion a, stronger detonator than is used with the latter compound. With the view of meeting this requirement, Nobel's Explosives Company (Limited) now manufacture Gelatine Detonators of a special strength, and these should invariably be employed in order that the full power of the Blasting Gelatine may be developed. The Gelatine Detonators are supplied by all tho Company's Agents, bnt if at any time or from any cause they cannot be obtained, a Dynamite primer instead of a Blasting Gelatine primer may be used, and the charge can then be readily exploded by means of an ordinary detonator. The primer and detonator should be fixed up in the same way as in blasting with Dynamite, and putinto the borehole over the other cartridges. BLASTING GELATINE is adapted for blasting in very hard rock, but it is at the same time better suited than Dynamite for blasting in mild or soft rock where a shattering effect is not required, because, although the disruptive force of the forraor is much greater than that of the latter, the transmission of the explosion throughout its mass is lesß rapid. The enormous power of Blasting Gelatine is thus developed more slowly, and the shattering effect of its explosion is therefore less severe than in tne case of Dynamite, For breaking up furnace bottoms, large masses of iron, etc., Blasting Gelatine is superior to any other explosive. BLASTING GELATINE is not spoiled by immersion in water, and it ia therefore specially suitable for submarine mining, for coast defence, etc. When Dynamite is immersed in water, the nitro-glycerine begins to exude, and on that account in using Dynamite for subaqueous blasting special means must be employed to prevent the escape of the nitro-glycerine. Not so with Blasting Gelatine. Water has no action upon it, and the material may be exploded effectively after lying for MONTHS under water. The following distinguished authorities on explosive compounds have expressed unqualified approval of the No. 1 BLASTING GELATINK manufactured by Nobel'e Explosives Company (Limited), Glasgow :— Sir Frederick A. Abel, C.8., F.R.S., Chief Chemist of the British War Department, in an address on Explosive Agents, delivered in St. Andrew's Hall, Glasgow, on Ist March, 1883, stated :— " It is in every respect the moti perfect aephtive known. Brigadier-General Henry L. Abbot, Corps of Engineers, United States Army, after conducting a series of experiments, extending over several yearß, with explodves of every description, manufactured both in America and Europe, concludes his Ofßcialßeport to the American Government thus — " These experiments Bnow that this explosivo is the most powerful ever tested here, and that it is inott admirably suited to submarine mining," When set fire to by a fuse, or by other means, or when insufficiently detonated, Blast ¦ ing Gelatine burns rapidly without explosion, and gives off disagreeable fumes. This shows the absolute necessity for using the powerful Gelatine Detonators to ensure complete explosion. The Bpecial advantages Blasting Gelatine possesses over Dynamite may be summarised as follows : — 1. Blasting Gelatine is SO per cent, more powerful than Dynamite, and is the STRONGEST KNOWN EXPLOSIVE. 2. It is relatively much cheaper than Dynamite. 3. It is perfectly effeotivo IN WATER, without using the special precautions requisite in the case of Dynamite. 4. It is, when properly exploded, ENITRELY FREE FROM NOXIOUS FUMES. Blasting Gelatine, Dynamite, Detonators for exploding the same, Warming Pans, Biokford, Smith & Co.'s and Swansea Safety Fuse Co.'a White D.T. Fuse, Instantaneous Fuses, for use in dry ground, for use in damp ground, for use in subaqueous work, Igniters for Instantaneous Fuses, may be obtained from W. M. BANNATYNE & CO., Wellington, 16th September, 1886. AGENTS.
