[united peess association.! Auckland, 13th October. J. T. Clarke, charged with arson, was acquitted, the jury thinking tho evidence not strong enough. The Judgo summed up dead against him. In discharging the prisoner, he said that it was fortunate for him the jury had taken a lenient view of the case. Christchuech, 13th October. The Christchurch Meat Freezing Company at a meeting to-day decided to amalgamate with Messrs. Nelson Bros., of Napier and London, and decided to keep the company in existence, the principal shareholders expressing confidence that the occasion for starting operations would soon present itself. A house at Hill Norton belonging to Mr. George Wade was accidentally burned this afternoon It was insured for ,£l5O in the National office. Dunedin, 13th October. A deputation from the Chamber of Commerce waited on Mr. Larnach to bring undor his notice the desirableness of establishing a monthly or semi-monthly steam service between Dunedin and various settlements on the West Coast. Tho Minister promised to bring tho matter before the PostmasterGeneral. Ho thought .£2OOO or so would be spent in establishing a service.
