GOVERNMENT v. PRIVATE TOWNSHIPS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sin— Allovr mo to beg space in your column! for a few remarks upon the above subjeot. It ia now more than three yeara sinoe the pnblio woro invited to soleot land at Pahi&tav and in making a seleotion tho question of position of course formed an important consideration and the Government township reserve (having been Uid off by oompetent surveyors) woa lookod upon as a safe landmark to guide to a control position a selector who might bo a stranger to the district. Bnt faith in Government maps is somewhat rudely shaken by one's hearing doubts expressed as to whether this will bo the township after all, and taking advantage of the uncertainty, private individuals are ontting up seotionsand laying off townships Bomo distance from the reseives, thereby tending to unsettle tho population. Of course these persons have a right to do what they please with their own property, bnt they do not OROSDe censnre ehonld they mislead the public in order to dispoao of their seotions ; yet inch persons seem to mo to be praotioally no more onlpable than the Government, seeing that in each case the result is the ■ame. It is to be hoped that in this and similar cases the Government will see the propriety of definitely determining onoo for all where the central township shall be, in order that the pnblio may make their selections with some degreo of confidence. I am, &o , Bona Fidss.
