The Water Supply.

The following reaolution, pursuant to notioe, was moved by Councillor Danks at last night's meeting of the City Counoil:— " That the City Surveyor prepare plans and specifications for laying a new main from Polhill's Gully Reservoir connecting with tho new waterworks." He said that if the motion was carried he would move, at a future meeting, that the whole question be considered by the Publio Works Committeo. He thought the increase of revenue buico the starting of the Wainui-o-mata Waterworks justified the Counoil in going in for further expenditure in the direction he had indicated. He thought it would be advisable to oonneot the two supplies. Councillor M'Eenzie, In seconding the resolution, said he considered it was most desirable that a now main should be laid down. He thought it w^ld be a very serious affair if the Wainui supply were cut off and a fire broke out in the oity. Councillor Williams did not think it was necessary to prepare plans and speoifloatioua in order to arrive at an estimate of the cost of la j ing down a new main. He did not think tho Connoil should ask the Surveyor to go to the trouble of preparing plans aud specifications. Ho was alto of opinion that no nooesaity existed for laj ing down a new main. Councillor Richardson supperted the resolution. He Baid he did not think the burden on the Surveyor would be bo great as Councillor Williams seemed to think. He eoasiderod it would be desirable to oonnoob tho two supplies. Councillor FitzGorald objeoted to the propoßal. Tho Council had already been told that it would oost about .£2500 to connect tho two supplies, and the present finances of the Counoil .would not permit of suoh an expenditure Counoillor Smith urged that the motion Bhou'd be passed. He thought it would be desimblo to oonnect the Polhill Gully reservoir with the Wainui-o-mata supply. Councillor Edwards moved an amendmont to the effeob that tho Engineer should be instructed to prepare a detailed estimate of tho oost of laying down a main to oonneot tho Polhill Gully reservoir with the Wainui-o-raata supply. He pointed out that if his proposition were agreed to, the oost of preparing plans and specifications, as asked for by Counoillor Danks, would be obviated. This was seoonded by Counoillor Brown. Counoillor Pethoriok said he osnsidered the proposed expenditure unnecessary, seeing that if tho two supplies were conneoted they would not work properly, owing to tho difiWonoo in the levels. Councillor Danks said that the oost of obtaining the desired information would not be so much as some Councillors seemed to think. Ho explained that if the two supplies woro conueoted, the water from Wainui-o-mata would run into tho Polhill Golly pipes. The amendment of Counoillor Edwards was carried.
