CITY COUNCIL.
An ordinary meeting of the City Council waa held last evening. There were present : Tho Mayor, Councillors Danks, M'Kenzie, FitzGerald, A. W. Brown, Quiok, Williams, Pethoriok, Richardson, Benzoni, Edwards, and J. Smith. Only one tender for the supply of cement was received, and that was informal. Beveral amendments were mado in the burgess rolls. Councillor Potherick was added to the Foreshore Committee, and Counoillor Wileon to the Eeserves Committee. The vacancies on the Finance Committee, oauaed by the retirement of Councillor S. Brown and Newman wore not filled up. The following report was presented by the Adelaide-road Culvert Committee : — " The committee beg to report that they have inspeotod the plan showing the above culvert, prepared by the City Surveyor, and beg to recommend that the two small streams south of Express Avenue be passed into the culvert, but that tho stream running through Mr. Howell'a property bo not tapped. The committee consider _ the said two Bmall streams to be too insignificant to give rise to any legal claims. The committee also beg to recommend that tenders be at once called for the construction of so mnch of the culvert as will exhaust the JBISOO voted for the purpose on 7th May laat." Councillor Brown moved the adoption of the report. Counoillor Eichardsou seoonded. Councillor Petherick said he thought that the Counoil shonld be provided with fuller information on the subject. Counoillor MKouzie pointed ont that if Counoillor Petherick doßired further particulars he could be supplied ' on applying to the City Surveyor. The report waa then adopted. Coonoillir Brown was added to the Mangahoo Endowment Committee. Counoillor Richardson explained that the illness of one member and the abeeooe of another had prevented the committee from drawing up a report before now. Councillor Brown suggested that the committee should be enlarged, and given full power to aot. The Mayor remarked that it was deemed unwise to give a committee power to act in suoh matters. The subject then dropped. The report of the Public Works Committee (published in theso'columna on Tuesday) waa then considered. With regard to clause 3— That no aption be taken re the petition to declare Belfast-street a pnbho street, the same not being constructed according to the Council's regulations— a deputation of residents in that thoronghfare waited upon the Council and urged that the street should bo taken over by the Corporation. Counoillor Brown moved that the report be referred back to the Publio Works Committee. Councillor FitzGerald objeoted to the Council taking over and repairing private streets. He Baid that these latter were generally made to enable private persona to get high pricea for their land. The Mayor said there was a time when the Council were not so rigid in thes9 matters, and several private streets were then taken over. He wai in favour of referring the clause back to the Committee. Counoillor Edwards thought the fact should not be overlooked that if the value of land waa enhancad by the private streets the city was benefited. The olause was referred baok to the Committee. Clause 4-j-That the oharge for water supplied to private consumers outside the oity bo Is 3d per gallon. Councillor Biohardaon moved, and it was carried, that the oharge be Is. Clause 6— That the building known aa the Morgue bo Bold for removal. Councillor Eicnardson moved, and it was agreed to, the addition of the words *' after the Ist of October next." Clause 7— That Mr. Cleland bo informed that the Council will enter ta-in the question of continuing the formation of Coromandel-Btreet when the necessary consents of the private owners have beeu obtained by the persona desiring the execution of the work. Counoillor Danks moved, and it was agreed to, ' that the matter be referred baok to the Committee. Clanso B—That8 — That a tracing be procured of tho Government plans of the city. Councillor Petherick moved, and it was agreed to, that tenders be invited for the work. The report aa amended was then adopted. Accounts amounting to £2524 wore passed for payment. Councillor FitzGerald moved, pursuant to notice, '" That a by-law be passed amending clause 1 of the by-law of 19th June, 1881 (whioh provides that horses Bhall be led by hand acrosß footwaya), by exempting from the operation of that olause the case of vehicles drawn by two horses harnessed to a pole." The motion was carried without discussion.
