George Shgpherd, one of the assistant stewards of the Manapouri, was oharged with smuggling tobacoo ashore, and fined double the value of the goods, or 14 days' imprisonment. Thib Dat. G. A. Sala goes to Wellington to-day, bnt a movement ia on foot to induce bim to oome back and deliver a leoture on Dickens and Thackeray. If necessary a guarantee will bo raised. The master bakers have resolved to form an association for Auokland. The police are oarrying on a raid against the keepers of brothelß and disorderly houses. Despite alleged dull times many extensive business premises are in course of construction, or have tenders oalled for the purpose. Dunsdin, 9th September. The five ohildren who wore drowned on Sunday were buried to-day, a half-holiday having been deolared by the Mayor of Port Chalmers. The funeral was a very large one. A youth named E. Hughes, alias G. Wilson, has been committed for trial for breaking into a houße and stealing money. Invsbcakbill, TSis Dat. Bridget Campbell was yesterday committed for trial at the Supreme Court for setting flra to a house at A venal with intent to defrand the Standard Insurance Company. The, evidence is unusually strong against the accused.
