FOOTBALL.
Although the season of 1835 is very far advanced, several Urge matches remain to come off. First of all, there is a matoh between the Union and Merivtle (Christchurch) Clubs to-morrow. Then oome the oontests Kast Christohuroh t. Athletio and Merivale v. Poneke, on Saturday. On Monday next the East Christohuroh team meet the first fifteen of the Poneke Club, and it is probable that during the same week a matoh will take place between the Wellington and Poueke Clubs. The former club is the winner of the senior oup for 1885, while the latter holds the junior enp for the present season. Tho Poneke Club, however, now ranks as a senior olub, and iv future will play as suoh. The Chnstohurch footballers arrived by the Eotorua to-day, and were received by several of the Wellington Eueby Union. To-morrow evening the Union Club will entertain the Merivale team at a smoke oonoert in the Post Offioe Hotel. On Saturday night the East Christohuroh team will bo tiresent at a dinner given by the Athletio and Poneke Clubs, and on Monday evening they will attend a oonoert whioh is being got up by the Poneke Club. Tho players in the Merivale-Union matoh at Newtown, to-morrow afternoon, will be as follows:— Merivale.— Full book, Richards; throe-quarter backs, A. Gapes, Crowe, Ogier ; half baoks, Mountford, Athby ; forwards, Garrard (captain), Bowman, Homer, Haskins, Lowry, Evans, Halley, Bonrke, and Pozzi. Union.— Full baok, Elliott; three-quarter baoks, Jaoka, Kilner, Mountier; half backs, Smith, Bead; forwards, Little, M'Le&ry, Osborne, M'Donnell, Loasby, Hill, Franoe, Skinner, and Woods. A special tram will leave the Government Buildings at 2.30 p.m. carrying the teams and spectators to the ground.
