[TJNITKD PBKSB ASSOCIATION.] Christchtjrch, 9th July. The College Governor? have deoided to recommend the School of Art Committee to take steps to have specimens of tho art students' work sent to tho Colonial Exhibition in London. At the annual meeting of the Board to-day, Mr. Montgomery was reelected chairman. The Snpreme Court was occupied all to-day with the second charge against Ernest Bowland Davis, who is accused of administering laudanum to a young girl, with intent to enable him to commit a felonious assault, The prisoner oonduoted his own case with considerable smartness. He displayed great self-asßUranoe, and frequently inaolenoo in his demeanour. Mr. Justice Johnston f re* quontly had to caution him to oonduot himself with deoenoy. The young woman was a member of the Salvation Army. Auckland, 10th July. An unoccupied house of four rooms, in Parnell, owned by Mr. William Biokson, who resides at Henderson's Mill, was burned down laßt night. It was insured in the Standard f0rJ85550. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce the following resolution was carried : — "That in the opinion of the Chamber the differential rating imposed against Auckland by the scales of fares, rates and charges in use on the New Zealand railways is unfair and unjust, and ought to be removed." iNTBKOAEaiLL, 10th July. The Southland County Counoil to-day resolved to urge on Government the desirability of leaving the method of eleoting the county chairmen unaltered ; also of continuing the audit by Government officials. Ddnedin, 10th July. Mr. Donald Beid, barrister, is announoed as a candidate for Bruce. Wanganui, 10th July. A handsomely illuminated and highly complimentary address from the ratepayers, together with a purse of 110 sovereigns, was presented to Mr. Mayor Spurdle to-night. The objeot was to roooup him any loss sustained in connection with the late proceedings for breach of the law in doing some work for the Corporation, and to give the publio an' opportunity of proving that they had no sympathy with an entirely uncalled for prosecution. A number of leading business men were present, and highly complimentary speeches were made. Mayor Spurdle freely replied, and a very pleasant evening was afterwards spent. More money was offered for the testimonial than was required, and subscriptions had to be declined. Bawltjtha, 10th July. At a speoial meeting of the Clutha County Council to-day to consider the proposed local government measures, the following resolution passed :— Ist. That the only prospect of insuring to local bodies an aeanred finance lies in relieving their rateable property from Colonial taxation, bo that in the future property may be free to contribute as much as it can afford, by way of rates, for local purposes. 2nd. That the present method of auditing, also of electing County Chairmen, is the best, and the proposed change would tend to inefficiency in administration and inoreased expense, and that no alteration in the County Aots are desirable until the wishes of ratepayers have been more fully ascertained.
