Dunkdin, 30th May. Mr. D. R. Hay has aooopted a challenge from the Canterbury Club to play a oheßg matoh by telegraph between teams of eight or ten a sido. This Dat. A 6-roomed house in Union-street, occupied by Mr. Maggett, and owned by Mr. A. J. C Baber, was burned down this morning. The furniture was insured in the Viotoria for £150, and the building in the Norwich Union for £250. Some clothes which had been plaoed before tho kitohen fire to dry ignited and caused the fire. At the inquest held on Stanley, who fell through a skylight at the City Hotel, a verdict of Acoidental Death was returned, with a recommendation that a clause should be inserted in the city building regulations by whioh skylights should be guarded by iron bars at a sufficient distance to prevent anyone from falling through. Gibbobkx, 30th May. Mr. John Thomson, 8.E., of New Plfmouth, has been appointed harbour engineer, with a salary of £800 a year.
