Last night Professor Kirk, F.L.S., do-1-vered a leoture to the members and friends of the Vhian-street Mutual Improvement Society, entitled "Life Chanyos." The iv. c'?lc '?I! 8r ;. k?* ore beginning his leoture, Baid that ho had noticed tnat in somo unoccountablo manner the word "Zoological" had bf en placed in the advertisement announcing the leoture, whioh he said was singularly inappropriate, inasmuch as a large portion of his loeture would bo upon changes in plant life, and so it proved. The lecturer handled hissubjeot in a nice, easy manner, show Ing that he was thoroughly master of the situation, and desoribod what distemper was in animals, rust in wheat and other corn orops, and showed the astonishing rate at whioh it inoreases. He also alluded to the wondorful ohangos whioh take plaoe in the lancewood tree, peculiar to New Zealand from the sapling with long sword-like leaves to the forost tree, bearing blossom and fruit, and with flhort broad leaves. The leotnro was illustrated with diagrams and speoimens, and was listened to with great attention. A most hearty vote of thanks was accorded the looturer, and the proceedings were brought to a olose by the Rev. J. T. Hinton pronouncing the Benediotion. Wobld-wid* Honours.— The great Gorman remedy, St. Jacobs Oil, stands honoured with the highest distinction ever paid to a medicine. This is not only the caso in this country, but abroad evorywhore. At the New Zoaland International Exhibition, 1882, it reoeived the magnificent First Prizo Medal, hero reprodnoed, together with the highest diploma, for being, according to oritical tests, the best pain-curing and healing remedy known to mankind. Our Indian Empire— At tho recent Calcutta International Exhibition tho jurors awarded the gold : medal. Tho Englishman, of 6th May, comj monting on the unparalleled success of St. I /in>Si Oil. cays: — " Declaiming irrovemnt toiuieuuiua, st. Jacobs Oil improves on acquaintance, and the jurors havo, after mostcruoial tests, conferred npon it the gold modal." No other proprietary medioine has over been distinguished by snob an acknowledgment.
