THE TE ARO RECLAMATION.

TO TUB EDITOR. Sir—l should not havo again referred to this subject had not my name been mentioned in your leador of Friday. What I desire moro especially to point out w this, " that it was ths Public Works Committee who recommended tenders to be called for, and not the Finance Committee." It will bs rcmembored that when tho matter was referred book to tho Finance Committee Councillor Thompson undertook to propound a financial scheme. All that tho Finanoo Committeo know is this, that Councillor Thompson saw the Corporation banker who told him that "i/Me finances of the city were as well managed in lha future at they have been in the last eighteen months there would be no difficulty in gelling the money." This is the wholo financial scheme as propounded by Councillor Thompson, and, under the oiroumstanoes, I think I was justifiod in making tho remark that I did. Another point is this: Councillor Thompson, with whom I have had tho privilego of being associated for years on the Finanoo Committee, is now goin? ont of the Counoil and some one elso will nave to find the money. Had tho Counoil immediately carried out the soheme proposed by mo (whioh I thought, and still think, the most suitable to the altered oironmstanoes of tho case), the work might now be going on, and time allowed for negotiating the balanoe of money required. And I would have considorcd it part of my business to have shown how the balance of money required Bhould be got. In reference to the money—tho £25,000—i may briefly point out that about £6000 was p.iiJ for land for Cuba-street, Taranaki-sttcut. and Tory-street, and about £4900 for reclamation, for which there are 1800 casks of comont, tho trestlo-work, and I oonsidor nearly two acres of land, although, his Worship tho Mayor only limited it at one. I am, 4c, Samuel Brown.
