Mr. Stout arrived by Bpeeial train at Lyttolton at 2.40 p.m., and left by the steam tug Lyttelton, engaged speoially from the Harbour Board at £2 per hour. A man was convioted of illetjal fishing in the Selwyn, and had to pay in all about .£3. A fire occurred at Dowdall'B corn store, Tuam-streot East, to-night. The building was destroyed. It was insured for .£l5O in the New Zealand, and there is a policy of Xl5O in the same offioe on the engine, boiler, and ohaffoutter. This Day. The tampers' strike at Lyttelton has been settled. Dunedin, 15th August. The seventh annual meeting of the Patients and Prisoners Aid Society was held to-day. The report showed receipts .£431 6s Bd, and expenditure .£431 15s Id. Altogether 210 prisoners received aid, and of these 6 had returned the sums advanced to them. At the Police Conrt to-day, James O'Flaherty, against whom there were three previons convictions for larceny and over fifty for drunkenness, was committed for trial for stealing a Masonio jewel, value .£l5, at Outram. He was also committed for trial for trying to commit suicide by cutting his throat in the lockup. The hotelkeepers of the boroughs of South Dnnedin and Caversham have got up petitions for presentation to the Licensing Committees in their districts, praying for the extension of their licenses till 11 o'clock. The Baby Show to-day produced 135 entries, including seven pairs of twins. Owing to the enormous crush of sightseers, the judging had to be postponed till Monday. This Dat. In the case of the Bank of Australasia v. Walter Guthrie, a claim of J24100, on a guarantee, the jury, after five hours' retirement, returned a unanimous verdict for the defendant. Gisborne, 15th August. Sir George Whitmore arrived by the Southern Cross to-day. He leaves by the Botomahana to-night. A largely attended public meeting was held last night for the purpose of bringing the requirements of the distriot under the notice of the Government, especially the necessity for a harbour, and a railway to open up the interior of the country. An influential committee was appointed to draw up a petition to Parliament. Baiclutha, This Dat.
