HARBOUR BOARD.
The ordinary meeting of the Harbour Board was held yesterday aftornoon, and was attondod by Messrs. Pearoo (Chairman), Fißbor, Wheeler, Coffey, Nathan, Krull, Lancaster, and Captains Rose and Williams. The Wharves and Quays Committee reported that a trial of the new dredge had been mado, and that it had been found desirable to cover in the nmchinory and oago tho boiler, a work whioh thoy reoommonded should be oarriod out forthwith. Captain Williams complained of tho delay whioh hod taken place in commencing dredging operations. In reply to tho Mayor, the Chairman said he oould not say whother it was also intended to cage the man in oharge of tho machinery. The recommendation of tho committee was agreed to. Tho Harbourmaster reported that ono of the bnoys had boon carried away and tho flagstaff on Mount Victoria partly destroyed in the late gale. It was decided that these matters should be attended to. A series of formal resolutions in oonneation with the floating of the .£30,000 loan was proposed by Mr. Nathan, seoondod by Mr. Krull, and agreed to. The Engineer certified that tho contraot for the barges had been oomploted. Tho Chairman stated that tho Board would havo to pay the contractor £190 9s lid over and above the price agreod upon. A letter was road from Mr. W. T. L. Travers threatening legal proceedings unless the X 205 withhold on the previous certificate were paid at onoe. Mr, Pearoe explained that tho Board were bound to pay the contractor on tho production of the usual certificate. On the .motion of Captain Rose, it was decided to pay the .£205 and allow the other amount to stand over. Mr. Coffey suggested that a special meeting should be called to considor the whole question of tho contraot, and that the Engineer, Harbourmaster, &0., be in attendance. The overdraft was reported to amount tO£4577. Accounts amounting to £1800 were> passed for payment. Captain Williams gave nofcioo of motion that 30 feet be taken off the inside end of the S.E. T of No. 1 shed, and that the building be oxtended 50 feet the other way. Mr. Wheeler notified his intention to move at the next meeting that a legal opinion bo obtained as to the Board's liability for goods destroyed by fire while in the wharf sheds. Tho Chairman informed Mr. Wheeler that shortly after the firs at the Dunedin railway station the Board obtained from Messrs. Buller and Gully inoh an opinion as that now askod for. The motion was consequently withdrawn. Tho Board then adjonrnod.
