THE LONDON MARKETS. THE WOOLWICH EXPLOSION. FIGHTING IN MADAGASCAR. REPULSE OF THE FRENCH. [bEOTHb'6 TKLEOaUCB.] London, 24th September. Consols .have advanced £, and aro now quoted at 101 J. Now Zealand securities are quoted to-day as follows :— 5 per cent. 10-40 loan, 103£; 5 per cent. 1889 loan, 10f> ; 4£ per cent. 1879-1904 lopn, 102J ; 4 per cent, inscribed stock, 100£. The market rate of discount has advanced £, and is now 2§ per cent. ; bank rate, 3g per cent. The grain market has an upward tendency. Adelaide wheat, ex store, has advanced to 45s 6d; New Zealand ditto remains at 40s to 445. Off-coast cargoes of New Zealand wheat are quoted at 44s (sic) ; Adelaide flour, ex store, 335. Australian tallow— Best beef, 40s ; best mutton, 41s. At to-day's wool sale, the catalogue comprised 10,600 bales. The tone of the sale was again firm. 25th September. The explosions at the rocket factory, Woolwich, continued without intermission for upwards of an hour. Some of the rockets travelled for miles, but in the majority of cases little or no damage was done by them. It is believed that the explosion of the factory was accidental. Telegrams which have been received from Zanzibar report that fighting has .taken place between the Hovas and the French troops in Madagascar. The former made an attack, in force on the position occupied by the Frenoh on the West («ic) Coast of the island, and after stubborn fighting, lasting several hours, the Frenoh were driven from the position with considerable loss.
