THE GOVERNMENT AND THE SUEZ CANAL. [REUTER'S TELEGRAMS.]
(Received July 18, 12.30 p.m.) London, 17th July. Tenders for the Now South Wales 4 per cent, throe million loan, with a minimum of par, wero opened to-day. The total amount offered was found to be £3,140,000. Tenders at par will receive 93 per cent, of the allotment, and tenders above par will receive in full. The tenders for tho Hobson's Bay Harbour Trust Loan of £250,000, at 5 per cent., which were opened to-day, amounted to £334,000. Tenders at par will receive 45 per cent, of tho allotment, and those above par, in full. (Received July 18, ] p.m.) London, 17th July, Evening. In the House of Lords to-day, the Earl of Granville, in reply to a question, stated that tho Government had found it impossible to make better conditions in the agreement for the construction of the second Suez Canal, owing to tho position of Count do Lesseps and tho rights of shareholders in the existing company. Still, his Lordship added, the Government were not prepared to admit that Do Lessops possessed a monopoly in connection with 'the construction of canals through tho Isthmus of Suez.
