MELROSE, PRO. AND CON. TO THE EDITOR.
Sib — Mr. Councillor Logan gives several reasons for the purchase of Melrose as a site for a cemetery, Ac, but not one against it. What a pity that gentleman did not attend the meeting convened by the Mayor in order to discußß the question ; those present might possibly have taken quite a different view of the matter ; I say, possibly, bqoauso there are always two sides- to a question. I noticed with surprise that the City Council a few months ago extended Austin-street about 150 yards in tho direction of Melrose, excavating rook and making a deep cutting, at a cost, lam told, of over .6500. This extension at present leads to nowhere in particular, but they must havo had tome object in view. Was it to make a short cut to the delightful Melroso district? Mr. Logan, the Connoillor, perhaps knows. Those of the ratepayers unaoquainted with Melrose ore invited by Mr. Logan to examine the distriot. Now that is very fair, and while they are about it they might as well have a look at the Austin-street extension. The extension of Austin-street was apparently a gross waste of publio money, and the purchase of Melroße for a cemetery would be even worse. I am, Ac, A Ratepayer.
