THE UNION COMPANY'S NEW STEAMER TARAWERA.
On 30th Soptember Mossrs. Denny and Bros, launched from Leven shipyard, Dumbarton, a steel screw steamer of 1950 tons gross measurement, for the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand (Limited). On leaving tho ways sho was named the Tarawera by Mrs. M'Crae, of Glasgow. The dimensions of the Tarawora are— length between perpondioulara, 285 feot ; breadth, moulded, 36 feet ; depth, moulded, 25 feet. She has been conotruoted of Siemens-Martin steel, under special survey of Lloyd's, and classed in their registry 100 Al, three-docked. She ia built on 1 the continuous cellular-bottom principle, with solid floors, and adapted for water ballast. Throughout the maohinery spacf the structural system of deep plate frames and hole-Bide stringers has been adopted. She will have accommodation for 194 first-doss passengers on main and upper decks, and 80 aecond-olaaß passengers on main deck. The officers and engineers will be accommodated in the midship aide houses under bridge deck, and the firemen and crow will occupy tho forecastle. Tho 'vessel will be fitted by Messrs. Denny and Co. with oompound surfaoo condensing engines, having oylindera 38 inohea and 68 inches diameter, and the stroke of piston 45 inohea. While being constructed the Tarawera has been under tho inspection of Mr. John Darling, superintending engineer of the company. — European Mail.
