A man named P amnel Cotton m arrested on the Qaean's Wharf yesterday on a oharge of being of unsound mind, and convoyed to the Foline Station by a posse of constables. Cotton waa a passenger from Sydney by the steamer Wakatipu, and daring the voyage aorois he oonduoted himself in snoh an eooentrio manner that Captain Wheeler had him plaoed under snrvoillanoe, and on arrival in port at onoe informed the police authorities of the matter. The man, who has evidently been drinking heavily, was examined by Drs. Henry and Key worth this afternoon, and on their oertifioatos was oommitted to the Lnnatio Asylum. A reports was current in town yesterday to the efloot that a looil publican was abont to be prooeeded against on a charge of " lambing down " a man from the oonntry. We have made enquiries on the tubjeot, and find that a few days ago a man repoited to the authorities that he had been swindled out of a sum of money by a lioensed victualler. He was advised to institute steps in the matter, bnt as he has not yet done so, it is presumed nothing farther will be heard of his oomplaint. The Wainrapa Daily understands that Mr. 0. F. Worth, who is well-known in Wellington, contemplates settling on land near Masterten, and giving np his present occupation as a pnblioan. At the usual monthly sitting of the Diatriefc Court on Friday next the case of Dnggan v. Flimmer, for wrongful seizure in oomoeotion with a bill of salo, will bo hoard. Damages are laid at £ 100. Mr. Ollivier will appear for the plaintiff and Mr. Edwards for the defendant. The oase is likely to last a whole day.
