Auckland, 4th September. Mr. C. B. Stone has been eleoted one of the Direotors of the Mutual Insurance Company. Between TO.OOO and 80,000 chares have been taken up. The following additional insurances on the late fire has been ascertained : — Murphy, fruiterer, stock and furniture damaged, £100, Norwioh Union; Ambrose and English's dairy, damaged, .£SO. The Colonial Office had J8175 re-insured. William Walters, the well-known sportsman and horse-breeder, died to night at the age of 54 years. Chbibtchuboh, 4th September. A case of some importance to Municipal Counoils was heard to-day. A man named Beard set up in business as a scavenger in opposition to the one who held the regular oontraotfrom the City Council, and the latter sought to restrain him. The Bench considered that section 47 of the Publio Health Aot was very olear on the point, and decided in favour of the Counoil, inflioting a nominal penalty. ¦j A woman of ill-fame attempted to oommit suioide to-day by drowning herself, but was resoued at once. Fourteen applications were made to the Licensing Bench at Cbristohuroh South today for J2 o'olook lioenses, including three by restaurant-keepers, who have had general lioenses granted them. Some were granted, bat not to any of the latter. Barrett, the publioan, had his license given him back, though there was aome opposition. He has pulled down his old place, and is building a three-story hotel in ita plaoe^-a fact of whioh his counsel made a great point. Wilkinson, the aotor, and two other men, arrested for taking part in the row on Sunday morning, over the dosing of the theatre, were discharged by the Benoh to-day. The magistrates said the police were quite right to stop the disturbance, but it waa evident they had captured the wrong men. ' This Dat. Timartj, 4th September. At the inquest on the late Mr. E. H. Tate to-day, a verdict waa returned that deceased died from a fit of serous apoplexy. During the laat week neirly 40 feet cf the solid concrete work of the breakwater was completed, and the work ia progressing very rapidly. An additional 220 feet of woodea wharf will be finished in about a fortnight. The solid oonorete work now extends about 1200 feet seaward, with 24 feet of water at dead low spring tides at the outer end. The work ia progressing at the rate of about 60 feet per month. Dunedin, 4th September. Leading members of the legal profession in Dunedin who have been oensulted on the subject have, in opposition to the opinion just given by the Solicitor-General, advised that the licensing fee 3 under the Licensing Aot and Dog fiegiatration Aot are payab c to County Councils, and not to Town Boards. At the Dunedin South licensing meeting to-day, the police brought the case of Scott, landlord of the Newmarket Hotel, under notioe. It will be remembered that judgment was given against him in the Resident Magistrate's Court in a lambing-down oaae. The Committee decided that they oould not take oognisanoe of the matter, at any rate until a renewal of the licence was applied for. This Dat. At the City Court, Robert Warnea waa charged with fraudulent bankruptcy. The polioe applied for a remand to enable them to aeoerUin whether it was desirable to have the case heard here or tt Oamaru. The prisoner wished to be sent to Oamaru immediately, but the Bench granted the remand. This ia the first case under the Criminal Fugitives Aot. Invebcabgill, 4th September. The Chamber of Commerce, at a meeting held to-day, considered the proposal of the Dunedin Chamber re direct steam service subsidy, and resolved, on an amendment, "That this Chamber is of opinion that the snbsidy of .£30,000 should be offered for an efficient service," as against a motion to the effect that tho Chamber is of opinion that the preeent and prospective trade offers sufficient inducement to steamship owners 1 without subsidy.
