DISTRIBUTION OF SCHOOL PRIZES.
The prizes in connection with the Featherston State School were presented by Mr. J. G. Cox, chairman of the School Committee, on Friday last, in the presence of a number of the friends and parents of the children. The prizes were obtained by subscription, and presents of books were given by the residents. Mr. J. G. Cox, in addressing the children, said the Committee and himself wore greatly pleased at the result of the late examination, 85 per cent, of the children having fully passed, and the average attendance having been 138 out of 156 on the books. Mr. Cox then presented tho prizes as follows :— Standard VI, Eva Cundy ; V, Beatrice Cundy and Edith Vile ; IV, John Oakly and Amy Jackson ; 111, Neville Willoughby, Oliver Bunny, and William Lloyd ; 11, George Cox and Herbert Keys ; I, Bertie Bunny and John Jackson. Writing, J»t prize, Janet Yule, 2nd prize, H. Jackson ; Reading, Ist prize, E. Bunny, 2nd prize, E. Saunders ; Drawing, Ist prize, Nellie Toogood; Sewing, Nellie Reddock, 8 yeans of age. Special prizes given by the following gentlemen were then presented : — By Mr. M'Shane : Ist prize in the school, W. Vile ; Ist prize, Standard 111, Sarah Amy Dickers ; Ist prize, Standard 11, Mary Jane 'Jidswell. By Mr. D. C. leir— lßt prize, Standard IV, J. Oakley; Ist prize, Standard IV, Kate Cundy ; Ist prize, Standard 111. Amy Keys, 2nd prize, Kate Riddick. By Mr. J. Oakly— lst prize, Standard lV., J. Fry ; Ist prize, Standard 111., Eva Haycock ; Ist prize, Standard 1., D. Robertson. By Mr. W. Toogood— Standard 1., Mabel Cnndy, G. Toogood, W. Osman, Nellie Oaman. By Mr. M'Farlane— Standard IV., A. Toogood; Standard 111., Honoria Mary Jackson. Ihe above special prizes wore given by the gentlemen named to be presented to Ihe children in public, but those given by Mr. M'bhane were, for some reason not explained, the only prizes handed to the children by the parents, the others being presented in the teacher's room. Mr. H. Bunny having made some remarks, three hearty cheers were given for the chairman, Mr. J. G. Cox, and also three times three for the teachers. The distribution of prizes at the Karori School took place on Friday afternoon, when, after various sports and a most substantial repast of cakes, fruit, and tea, the prizes were given away by the Chairman of the Sohool Committee, Mr. C. C. Graham, m the presence of a large number of the parents and friendß of the pupils. The chairman took the opportunity to congratulate both the teachers, Mr. and Miss Dyer, aB well as the pupils, on the favourable results of the recent standard examination, at which the number of passes had been very great, in fact considerably above the average of country schools, and quite up to the average of tho town sohoola ; and further stated that Mr. Lee, the Inspector of Schools, had given a most favourable report of the progress made during the past year. Mr. Graham then handed the prizes, a very nioely seleoted net of books, to the pupils who had made the two best passes in each of the standards, after whioh, in tho name of the pupils, he handed to Mr. and Miss Dyer two presents, viz , a v< ry pretty silver pen, inkstand, and a ve'vet reticule, which had been subscribed for by the pupils themselves, as a mark of their regard in which Mr. and Miss Dyer have been held during the short time the.? have been in oharge of the school. Mj. Dyer returned thanks for himself and his daughter, and dwelt on tho good-feeling which had obtained between them and the pupils during his term of offioe. He trusted that the results next year would be even better. After numerous ringing cheers for their teachers, the committee, and the ladies who had provided the numerous good things they had partaken of, the proceedings terminated. The following are the names of the pupils who carried off the prizes at the recent examinaion at the Taita Sohool : — Standard VI , Erneßt Welch ; V., Ellen Meager ; IV , Maurice Welch ; 111., Arabella Welch ; IT., Richard Menzie ; 1., Edith Williama.
