The Telegraph publishes telegrams from Tasmania describing extraordinary natural phenomena. A landslip occurred 20 miles down the River Derwent, below Hobart, causing heavy floods. Investigation being made, it was found that the mountain was on fire. The flames are described as rising to a great height, with intense heat. A dense mist prevented the people from going near. It has been suggested that a seam of coal in the neighbourhood may have taken fire. Melbourne, 26th November. The Union Bank has demanded a retractation and apology from the Age newspaper for recent statements ai to alleged irregularities in the Bank. A test action will Bhortly be commenced to ascertain the legality of using the totalieator on racecourses. Brisbane, 26th November. Mr. Griffiths, leader of the Opposition, has been entertained at a banquet at Warwick. He denounced the Government for sending to India for coolie labour without the consent of Parliament, and maintained that the transcontinental railway scheme would place 20,000,000 acres of land in the hands of big corporations. Ha considered the scheme a dangerous one. Messrs. Money Wigram's steamer Durham is being chartered by the Government for the conveyance of 400 immigrants to Queensland. Cooktown, 26th November. The inquiry into the loss of the steamship Brisbane wai concluded on the 22nd; no blame was attached to the captain or oScers. The wreck was sold for .£5O.
