RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
This Day. (Before Mr. E. Hardoastle, K.M.) DRUNKENNESS. John M'Neal, for this offence, wa* fined ss, with the usual alternative of 24 hours. LABCBNT. William Robertson was charged with stealing a portmanteau containing o'othing and tools, the property of Daniel Mason. Prosecutor was a passenger by the H&wea which arrived on Wednesday last. He put the portmanteau in the shed, in the o ire of the storeman. Subsequently the prisoner went into the shed, and was watched by the storeman, Morris, who saw him open the portmanteau, push hie hand ia, and take oat a piece of paper. Morris sent for a constable, and, as prisoner was about to take the portmanteau away, gave prisoner into custody. In defence, the prisoner said he had taken nothing away, but made no other defence. The same prisoner pleaded guilty to Btealing a pair of boots, the property of Messrs' Staples. Prisoner was sentenced to 14 days' hard labour on each charge, the ient«ft«*i to b» cumulative.
