WELLINGTON CITY COUNCIL. { ALTERATION OF BUILDING REGULATIONS. ri^HE following By-law having beenpasßed JL at a Special Meeting of the City Council, held on the 17th November, 1881, will be confirmed at the Ordinary Meeting of the Council to be held on the loth December, 1881, at 7.30 p.m. :- 1. That No. 1 Building District, as defined in the Building Regulations By-law of 9th September, 1879, be altered bo as to exclude Town Sections 199, 201, and that part of 203 lying to the westward of Herbert-street, and the whole of that portion of the distriot lying to the eastward of Cuba-street extension, with the exception of the Market Hall Reserve. Also that portion of the Thorndon Reclamation lying to the north of Bunny-Btr-et, between Thorndon Quay and the Railway Reserve ; such excluded portions to becone portion of No. 2 Building District. 2. That within No. 1 District, buildings may be erected, of whioh the external -walls shall be iron, of the character and dimensions as described in the following schedule :—: — SCHEDULE. The walls of buildings may be constructed with studs of H or T iron of suitable sizes, according to height or dimensions of bnilding, and that each fifth joint be plated on each side with fin boiler plate, bolted through tha joint diagonally, every two feet with |in screw bolts. Toe boiler plates to have at scarf plates of similar iron of same thickmesa riveted on to them, and the joists to be co fixed as to tie the outer walls together. The covering to bo of iron of not less than No. 16 gauge. All mouldings or projections to be of iron of similar gauge, and parapets to be carried up to a similar height as prescribed for brick buildings, and to be covered both inside and outside with iron of the quality specified for mouldings, Ac — viz , not loss than No. 16 gauge. 3. That the last sentence of Clause 3 of the aforesaid By-law of 9th September, 1879, be repealed, and the following substituted in hen thereof: — "After inspection as aforesaid by the City Surveyor, the plans and specifications may be removed from his custody, but if so, they must be liable to inspection by the City Surveyor, or hia appointee, at any time during business hours." 4. That the following new Clause be added to the Regulations :—": — " If, in the opinion of the City Council, a fall compliance with these Regulations, or any of them, in respect of any proposed repairs or additions to any existing buildings would needlessly affect with in jury the course and operations of business, or be attended with great loss and inconvenience to any persons, without a corresponding benefit to the community, the City Council may, on special application, relax or modify the tame, provided that such other terms as they may impose be complied with by the applicant ; and, further, provided that in case of any proposed departure from the existing Regulations, notice of the same shall be advertised by tho applicant for at least seven days before the application shall be considered by the Council." THE Trustees of the above School are about to erect a Bpacious house for the accommodation of Boarders, which ia expected to be ready for occupation at the beginning of the New Year. The Classrooms, built about three yeara ago, are large and lofty. The situation of the School is very good. It Btands in a reserve of about six acres, forming an excellent cricket field and play-ground. The Eev. B. W. Harvey, M. A., Incnmbent of St. Paul's, Wellington, has been appointed to the office of Head Master, and will enter on his duties in January next. Mr. Harvey was a Scholar of St. John's College, Cambridge, and has had large and varied experience as a teacher. The course of instruction will embrace Religions Knowledge, the English, French, German, Latin, and Greek languages, History, Geography, and Mathematics, with special preparation, where desired, for the Civil Service and other examinations. Facilities will also be given for the Btndy of Natural Science. The School Year will be divided into Three Terms of 13 weeka each. Tuition Fees, for pupils under 12 years of age, 3 guineas ; and for pupils over 12 years, 4 guineas a term. Board, including washing, a term. SCHOLARSHIPS. The Trustees propose to elect six scholars, who will reoeive free tuition, two of whom, if resident at a distance, the Head Master will be prepared to receive as boarders at the rate of £7 a term. The first election will take place in December next. Examination will be held, if necessary, in Wellington, Greytown, and Patea, as well aa Wanganui.
