THE WATER SUPPLY. TO THE EDITOR OF THE EVENING POST.
Sie — Having recently arrived here from the Old Country, and being desirous of seeing any places or works of note in the neighbourhood, I went a few day* since to the waterworks at present supplying the city, and walked, in some places climbed, over the hills to the reservoir, or collecting basin, which appeared to be all that could be desired for its pnrpone. In returning I came down to that which I should call the distributing reservoir, or tank, and looked about to find the filtering beds, necessary for a water supply to a town or city, in vein. On enquiry I found that there were no means ÜBod to purify the wator. Now this is a grave mistake, and should certainly not be allowed in a oity like Wellington where there are efficient engineers who could easily remedy such an evil— l oan call it by no less a term. Again, ih« distributing tank or reservoir is quite unprotected from the accumulation of decaying vegetable matter which must blow into it from the surrounding hills. Not that alone, as animal putrescence most probably finds its way into the tank. These poisonous agents can be avoided by simply roofing it over, closing tho ends, and keeping them secured by lock and key. Ab the hot weather is now approaching it is absolutely necessary that this work should be done for the sake of tho health of the population of Wellingtor. I am, &c, "E. W. Bryant, C.E.
