Christchurch, 24th October. In consequence of repeated complaints about the candle factory at Sydenham, the Board of Health has at last ordered the works to be discontinued. The proprietor admitted that there was a nuisance occasionally, but pleaded for time to erect new premises in which to carry on the tallow melting, which was the portion of the mannture chiefly complained of. Tho Board granted him six weeks' grace. At Miss Pomeroy's benefit to-night, tho house was crowded with the largest audience of the season. Ihe company leave lor Wellington to-morrow. This.Day. A six-roomed house iv Manchester-Btreet belonging to Mr. W. Dearsley, and occupied by 'Jhorpe Talbot, was destroyed by fire early this morning. Tho house was insured for d£3oo in the Victoria Office. A hail storm occurred here this morning, but the weather is now fine. Auckland, 24. h October. Messrs. Oppenheimer & Co , of this city, havo received a cab!e message, informing them that tho firm of Henry W. Poabody and Co , of Boston, havo decided to lay on a line of sailing ships at regular intervals to this port. Isaacs, a storekeeper at Cambridge, was fined iJS and costs for allowing liquor to bo sold to natives in his new store at Oxford. Sergeant Watson, of the Victoria Company, won the Mayor's Champion Belt, offered for competition to the volunteer corps. It was won by two points only. Dunedin, 24th October. Private advices received here confirm the report of serious damage by frost of tho tobacco crop in America., and of a rise in prices. This Day.
