In making the fire a little cool should be used first, and then tho coke on top. In renewing the fire, rake out tho ashes, put a little coal (slack will do very well), then place coke or the cinders on top ; the coke should be not larger than an egg, and will burn better if damped; coke and coal should be mixed together for a range. If, instead of throwing on half a scattlefml at a time, the coke (foi a grate fire) ia put on piece by piece with the i tongs, it will repay tho trouble, giving a I clean brilliant fire, and throwing a much i greater heat than coal alone, and at much less cost.
