I UNITED PBBSS ASSOCIATION.] Hamilton, 13th October. The lato reports from Te Aroha, which were to the effect that mining matters were decidedly improving, are now confirmed. A new reef has been discovered on the ridge of a mountain, running in a northerly direotion, and not far from the first prospectors' claim. The correspondent of the Waikato Times reports that the reef is an enormous one, and that gold is to be seen in almost every part of it. It is expected to yield five onnoea to the ton. Tawhiao is busy choosing spots of ground and setting his men to work preparing for ploughing. He intends to have 120 acres planted in potatoes. Auckland, Tnrs Day. A solemn requiem mass was performed at St. Patrick's Cathedral for tho repose of tho soul of the late Archbishop Steins. During a boys' quarrel at North Shore, a boy, named William J. Endins, aged nine, B tabbed a lad, named Alexander G rattan, in the back with a penknife. Endins was brought before the Magistrate and remanded till Monday. At a meeting of persons interested in the building trade last night, at which 300 were present it was decided to work 8^ hours per day, and have a half -holiday on Saturday. At a meeting of the Grammar School Governors to-day, it was reaolvod to erect a boarding establishment, capable of accommodating 40 pupils. Chbistchubck, This Dat. At Christ's College Bports yesterday, the challenge-cup for the greatest number of pom ts was won by W. P. Studhoime. ashbubton, This Dat. At the Magistrate's Court this morning, Chas. Bylands, on remand, was committed for trial on two separate charges of obtaining goods by means of valueless cheques. A third charge of a s'tnilaf nature broke down, in consequence of its being shown that the cheque had not been presented for payment at the bank.
