Auckland, 6th October. The contractors for the reclamation and filling-in at the big dock site commenced operations to-day. Mr. H. D. Morpeth, captain of the Ponsonby Rowing Club, has been challenged by Mr. Tatea, whom he defeated in the last regatta, to row for a £20 trophy, in December. Mr. Barstow, R.M., sat on the Bench today fcr the last time. Mr J. B. Rnssell, as senior member of the legal profession present, expressed the resrret of the Bar at his retirement. Mr. Barstow suitably replied. Christchuhch, 6th October. A fish-hawker at Lyttelton has been fined 5s to-day for selling flounders under 9in long. The case was brought aa a deterrent to the practice of taking fish of illegal aizo, and waa the first of the kind. Mr. J. T. Fiaher stands for his old constituency at Heathcote. There is not much life about the Christchurch constituencies. Mr. John Anderson, the well-known ironfounder,- has consented to stand for the Southern district, and Mr. S. P. Andrews is up for the Northern constituency. Mr. H. Toomer is the only candidate for Stanmore, and for St. Albans Mr. J. I vans Brown has been mentioned. Mr. C. Clare, the well-known auctioneer, is said to be coming forward for Christohuroh South. For Sydenham, Mr. J. W. Treadwell is the only candidate as yet. Mr. Montgomery and Mr. Rolleston both stand for their old constituencies and are unopposed so far; Mr. W F. Pearson offers himself for Ashley, Mr. W. C. Fendall for Cheviot, while Isaac Wilson and J. H. Lee contest Kaiapoi. For Lyttelton there are three candidates — the Hon. Mr. Richardson, Mr. Allwright, and Mr. S. R. Webb. The Premier goes to his old constituency of Swlwyn, and for the new Lincoln district Mr. H. W. Perryman ia announced. Mr. D. M'Millan is mentioned for Coleridge. Wanganui, 6fch October. At the annual meeting of the Wanganni Rowing Club this evening, a resolution was passed that it was desirable that an Association of Rowing Clubs throughout the colony be firmed, with the object of fostering amateur rowing. The Wanganui Club is in a nourishing condition. Invercargill, 6th October. At a meeting of the Hospital Committee to-night, the Treasurer reported that Mr. J. T. Thomson, C.K., had sent him a donation of £ LOO to the funds of the institution, and that the proceeds of the recpnt Scottish entertainment in aid of the funds of the Hospital were over .£IOO. Over JB7O nas already been collected in the district for the fund in ad of the persecuted Jews in Southern Russia. The list is not yet closed. The Southland Hussars will undergo six days' conseoutive training, commencing on x2th December. Dunedin, 6th October. The Otago school returns for the quarter show 18,382 children on the roils at the commencement of the quarter, and at the end 19,178. The average a' tendance was 15,190, being about one thousand less than before the outbreak of measles. Captain Baldwin stands for Dnnedin East. This Day. The Orient steamer Cuzco sailed from Plymouth for Australia on 3rd October with 376 passengers. John Price is supposed to have committed suicide on Sunday evening by jnmping off a punt at Alberton into the Clarence river. At the City Court this morning, William Alexander was charged with attempting suicide by taking laudanum. Accused said he took it for special purposes. The Bench bound him over in his own surety of £50, and ordered the insertion in the newspapers of a notice cantioning publicans against supplying him with drink. Haweba, This Day.
