A NEW POST OFFICE.

> It is understood that the erection of % new Chief Post Office for this city ia lieu of the old tumbledown shed which has so long disgraced the New Zealand metropolis, will thortly be commenced. Assuredly it will not be a day too soon, for the condition of the old braiding ia a 6candal to the colony. The Chief Postmaster and his subordinates do their best to m»et the public convenience

but their efforts are rendered to a largo extent nugatory by the unsuitableness of the building. We hope that the new office will be in- every reapecfc different. The Government offered and paid a premium for the beat design, and succeeded in obtaining a very good one, aiike handsome externally and convenient and well-arranged internally. We assume that this design will be carried out, as the Premier, replying to a question asked in Parliament, stated that " it was not intended to carry out the work through the Colonial Architect's office, as the building was one of those which ehonld be put into the hands of an outside architect." From this we conclude, with satisfaction, that the Government intend to carry out the handsome deßisrn to which the premium was awarded. If so, the new Post Office will be an ornament to the city. Wellington deserves to have a creditable building after being put off for bo many years with the present disgraceful old shanty.
