He has arranged with the Tonga Government to start the sugar industry, and for a subsidy for a steam service with Auckland. Thomas Douglas, aged 70, accidentally fell down in the Drury saleyards, and died shortly afterwards. The medical examination shows that death resulted from inflammation,' owing to the body being over-fat internally and externally. This Day. Mr. Barstow, 8.M., has resigned. Dunedin, 28th September. The body of Kerns, mate of the Mary Ogilvie, who was drowned in goinsf off to the vessel about three weeks ago, was found today underneath the wharf. The New Zealand Refrigerating Company expects to have tho works ready by February or March. The machinery is coming from London by the ship Hurunui. There was a fire near Port Chalmers on Tuesday evening, when a seven-roomed house was burned. It waa insured in the Standard office for A public meeting to-night decided to erect a statue to Kobert Burns in this city. Oamabu, 28th September. In the District Court to-day, Marshall Simmonds was charged with criminally asBaulting his daughter, a ohi d under 12 years of ago. The case was dismissed, as there was no evidence to show that the girl present was the child assaulted by tho accused. Tho witnesses had neglected to give information to tho police till some 12 days after the occurrence. His Honor, in dismissing the accussed, said he escaped through a mere oversight, but he had no doubt lie waa a great scoundrel. Tattbanqa, 28th September. A meeting was held to-day for the purpose of getting up a requisition to the Hon. John Hall to stand for this district, Mr. Vesey Stewart agreeing not to come forward if Mr. Hall elects to Btand. A requisition is also being signed asking Mr. Sheehan to come forward. Hawera, This Dat. Mr. George Hutchison, barrister, of Wanganui, has decided not to contest Waitotara. He now announces that he will contest Egmont with Major Atkinson. Wanganui, This Dat. Mr. Ballanco has announced himself as a candidate for Wanganui, and Mr. Bryce for Waitotara.
