THE WELLINGTON WOOLLEN FACTORY.

«. TO THE EDITOR OF THE EVBNING POST. Sir — As one interested in the above subject I was pleased to see it brought under the notice of the Chamber of Commerce at its last meeting. The question was shelved for the present for the purpose of having the opinion of a practical man on the subject. Mow, Sir, the real point at issue is— la there an opening for a W oollen Factory here ? and in attempting to supply an answer, I would draw your attention to the following facts : The Mosgiel, and Kaiapoi Mills cannot at present meet the demands on them for this reason, that the colonial goods have in most classes completely supplanted the imported article, both for tailoring and clothing purposes. The latter branch is a large item in New Zealand, and we at present depend to a great extent on the Victorian markets or the imported article, subject to a heavy duty. Why should this be so ? We have the increasing public demand for colo-nial-made goods, the labonr market now fairly cultivated for themaking-Ui.>, and even our legislators assisting by exempting from duty the cotton goods required in the manufacturing of clothing. All this goes to prove that before many years the greater portion of clothing required here will be made up in the country. 1 would therefore ask is VVellinurton to reap any of the advantages which must accrue from this ? We are at present interested about many matters — politics, railway and pleasure boat schemes, &c, let us also take this matter in hand, and keep on an undertaking which cannot fail to benefit those who may invest in it, and also the community at largo. I am, &c, T TT S 29th Sept., 1881.
