THE KAIWARRA TOLLGATE. TO THE EDITOR OF THE EVENING POST.
Sir — In places where tollgate^ were established aa a means of taxation, but have been abolished, can you inform me what sort of tax was substituted to make up the deficiency in the revenue caused by their being abolished ? If you will kindly give me this information, by your permission I will have a little more to say on this subject, whioh interests a very great number of people, and will endeavour to show how just a cause for complaint a section of the public have who pay toll ; and Ukewise how unjustly and nnequitably they are taxed by having to pay this toll. I am, &c, Industria. Kaiwarra, 28th September. [The plan adopted in Great Britain and Ireland has been to levy an assessment en landß and heritages in the borough or county in which the road was situated. — Ed. E.P.]
