Auckland, 21st Septembor. The Harbour Board has accepted Moßsrs. Hunt and White's tender of .£4536 for filling in an aero of the foreshore on eaoh side of the new dock sito, and facing the walls with scoria. This is being done to make a start with the enterprise. The London and Lancashire Fire Insurance Company arc re-establishing themselves in Auckland. John Jones, cook at Powell's dining rooms, dropped down dead in the kitchen. Warrants have been issued for the arrest of eight witnesses in the Wade smuggling cases, on a charge of conspiraoy. Christchurch, 21st f-'eptembcr. The Government h^s accepted an offer from the Chief Gaoler at Lyttelton to supply tho Orphanage with bread, provided it can be done under the ordinary contract rates. This Day. Seventy persons have signed a petition praying the Government to form a now light infantry volunteer corps in Christchurch. Mr. J. H. Lee is announced as a candidate for the Kaiapoi seat in the House of Representatives, vacant through the resignation of Mr. C. C. Bowen. Three other candidates are spoken of. The weather lately has been very dry and hot, and rain is much required. Dunedin-, 21st September. John Wilson, who was stabbed at Mtrick last week, is now reported to bo out of danger. The police have not yet suoceoded in capturing Beattie, his assailant. A man was found lying asleep, drunk, in Princes-street by the police, having £1W and a gold watch on him. This Day. The Chief Justice has quashed the conviction by Mr. Watts, R. M., in tho case Police v. Waters, holding that the Bupply of liquor on Sunday, without consideration, was no offence under the Licensing Ordinance. A new trial was granted in Seaborne v. Wilson. TATJRANQA, THIB DAY. A crowded public meeting was held in the Temperance Hall last night, convened by Mr. G. V. Stewart, chairman of the Tauranga County Council, when resolutions wero unanimously adopted urging that the port of Tauranga should bo re-opened without delay ; calling upon the Government _to give effect at once to the requisition signed by tho Tepuko eottlers and others, as embodied in the petition of Mr. btowart ; and urging upon the Government the necessity of affording every facility for acquiring the lands adjoining the proposed railway to tho Lake district lor the purposes of railway construction and settlement. A resolution was also carried recognising the great benefit secured to Tauranga by Mr. G. V. Stewart's special settlement, togethor with his untiring zeal and energy displayed so often to the advantage of the town and district.
